The Church of the Holy Ghost was originally a monastery that belonged to the Order of the Holy Ghost. The symbol of Order of the Holy Ghost was often a cross with two horizontal arms, the upper one shorter than the lower one. The Order of the Holy Ghost was founded by Guido of Montpellier in 1195 and approved in 1198 by Pope Innocent III. The Order of the Holy Ghost established hospitals and took care of orphans. In Denmark, 6 monasteries were established, one of which was in Faaborg.
In Faaborg, a House of the Holy Ghost, mentioned from 1376, was converted into a monastery and a hospital in 1478. Renovations and new buildings led to the church building seen today. In 1530, 6 years after the Reformation, the hospital was taken over by the city council, and the monastery building, apart from the church, was removed. In the church, the combination of the old monastery and the later church can be seen on the walls, among other things.
