The basic massing and composition of this house are typical of other late 18th and early 19th century farmhouses in Oxford. It is one and a half stories high with a five bay facade and center entry. The only decorative embellishments are a raised six-panel door and a four-pane transom over it . The paired windows on the side of the house probably date from the early 20th century.
This is the birthplace of Clarissa (Clara) Barton, founder of the American Red Cross. The Barton's were a prominent and liberal North Oxford family. Clara's father, Stephen, was active in town affairs. Her brothers Stephen and David . became leading lubermen of the region and later manufactured cotton good at the Guguenot mill site. Clara was a school teacher in Charlton and Oxford before she opened the firs t public school in Bordentown, New Jersey. She worked as a secretary in Washington, .D.C. at the beginning of the Civil War, but the news of the suffering in the battlefield prompted her to join the field nurses. She served at the battle of Antietam in September 1862 where 24,000 of the 130,00 men fighting died.
