Lubbock Morning Avalanche 17 Sep 1938

"The PWA In Washington approved grants of $358,000 for 10 projects in nine towns of the 10th congressional district, insuring construction to cost approximately $750,000.

This was the announcement made by Congressman George Mahon of Colorado City from his Lubbock headquarters in the federal building Friday morning following a telegram from H.A. Gray, assistant PWA administrator in Washington, D.C.

The grants, as announced in the telegram, were:

Snyder, to replace high school destroyed by fire, $65,455.

Seminole, school building, $37,000.

Tyron, Scurry county, new school, $20,316.

Seagraves, school, $27,000; and for new paving, either $40,000 or $49,000. The figure, it was explained, was not legible.-

Brownfleld, waterworks, $26,100.

Lamesa, auditorium and gymnasium, $9,452.

Crosbyton, electric plant, $42,000.

Colorado, new school, $74,200.

Amherst, gymnasium, $16,200.

The grants, the congressman said, presumably represent 45 per cent of the cost of various of the projects. The project sponsor in each case must pay the remaining 55 per cent. The announcement, he said further, adds to the record already made by the 19th of having received grants on more PWA projects than any other congressional district In the United States."
