This Historic District is bordered by 10th Street, 4th Street, Jefferson Avenue and the alley behind Washington Ave. It contains 99 properties, 65 of which are Contributing. Wellington is a town 34 miles south of Wichita, and three miles west of I-35. It is the County Seat of Sumner County. The town is a trading center for surrounding communities with railroads running in all directions. The town was first settled in 1871 with the first permanent masonry buildings built following the arrival of the railroad in 1879. The downtown area suffered a severe fire in 1881, and was heavily damaged in 1892 by a tornado.
