Plusieurs militants sont blessés, mis en prison; la ville est occupée par les soldats et la compagnie met en circulation une liste noire qui interdit toute embauche dans la région des militants syndicaux et de leurs descendants. This monument commemorates the exceptional nature of the confrontation of 8 October 1906, the first Canadian and Quebec labor dispute where men were killed. Employees of the company, James Maclaren, who wanted to get fair wages and working conditions, organized the International Union of Buckingham Workers to assert their claims. The employer then decreed a lockout, rejected all offers of mediation and appealed to a private army to break the workers' resistance. Thus, Monday, October 8, in the early afternoon, on the edge of the Lièvre River, a few hundred workers tried to convince colleagues to stop work. In front of them, armed and entrenched in the hills above the pine forest, were located about forty men of the "Thiel Detective Service". The following fusillade caused the deaths of Thomas Bélanger and François Thériault and wounded several other union leaders. Bewildered, workers climbed to the assault and put to flight the strong-arm of the Thiel. Following the altercation, the mayor of the city and the company manager requested the intervention of the militia and the army.
