This sign of history describes George Washington's Slaves that toiled in the farms and fields.

This sign is located near one of the Slave's quarters in the lower (by elevation) farming area. It describes their toil from sunrise to sunset, with a quotation from a former Washington Slave:

"The sun never caught him in bed, and he was willing it should find any of his people sleeping."

In 1799, most of Mount Vernon's 316 slaves were field workers with more than half being women. There is a list of the amount of field workers at each of the four main farms of the estate. Seasonal jobs and the function of the farms are described.

It is often overlooked that many of our founding fathers were in fact, slave owners.
