The former laboratory of the Hull experimental farm

This large red brick building is the first built by the federal government in the Outaouais. In 1918, the animal disease research sector of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture was looking for new areas. The Ottawa Experimental Farm is getting cramped. The large lot at Fairview House is ideal. The ministry is setting up the Veterinary Research Institute there.

The first director of the Institute is Dr Isaac S. Hadwen. He had animal enclosures set up and lived in the Fairview House, one of the rooms he used as a laboratory. It was under the second director, Dr Edward A. Watson, that this large brick laboratory was built between 1926 and 1928, which housed the staff of the research center. The third and final director, Charles A. Mitchell, held office until 1957.
