British Listed Buildings has the following text
“Pair of double stocks. Possibly C17, restored 1930 and 1960. Gritstone and
wood. Pair of stone posts approximately 1 metre high, grooved on inside
faces. 2 wooden boards slotted between, with holes for 2 pairs of legs. A
brass plaque on one post records that the stocks now stand on the site of
the old smithy. They were removed from the old pinfold in 1930 and restored
at that time and again in 1960.”
There is a plaque on one end of the stocks that reads
“These 17th century stocks marking the site of an old 13th century iron smelting furnace were originally situated North of this site by the old Pinfold. They did not have a seat and delinquents sat on a stone flag with their backs to the Pinfold wall. In danger of being destroyed they were moved to a field and then to this site in Nineteen Thirty. In 1960 they were completely restored and the seat added.”
