Lisa Marie Ziegert was a 24 year old teaching assistant at the Roberta G. Doering school when she was brutally murdered. The case shocked the otherwise peaceful community of Agawam and went unsolved for 25 years until the killer was discovered and brought to justice.
A rock at the base of the tree is inscribed:
This tree is dedicated

On the afternoon of April 15, 1992, Lisa was abducted from the store where she was a part-time clerk. Her abductor killed her and left the body in a wooded area. Her body was found four days later on Easter Sunday. The case received national coverage and was featured on the TV program Unsolved Mysteries.
The killer eluded identification until 2017 when DNA technology advanced to the point where he could be identified. The killer was Gary E. Schara who was indicted 2017 and plead guilty to murder in 2019. Schara was living only a few miles away in West Springfield, MA and was apprehended on a tip from his girlfriend.
