Park your vehicle at the road-end and follow the footpath along the clifftop to several viewing places, a platform and a specially constructed Hide where you can enjoy views of the scenic coastline and sandy beach, and perhaps be lucky enough to spot our precious Yellow-eyed Penguins leaving the beach to go out to sea in the early morning or returning ashore in the evening and crossing the beach on their way to their nests. Please do not wander off the paths, keep on the track and take note of the signage requesting that you take photos without using a "flash". This special viewing area is set up to allow minimum disturbance to the resident colony of penguins while enjoying the coastal views.
The scenic view along the cliff walkway is stunning, with blue ocean views and sandy beaches enhanced by the yellow Lupin flowers when in bloom. You can also regularly see New Zealand fur seals, with New Zealand sea lions and elephant seals occasional visitors to the beach. The best time of day is from 3pm onward. Bring your binoculars to get a good view from the Viewing Platform.
Remember, Penguins use this beach. Please respect their space. You are asked to vacate the beach by 3pm.
