The first Quakers, formally known as the Society of Friends, that settled in present day Adams, MA came from Smithfield, RI in the 1760s. The area was then known as East Hoosac. Despite their pacifists beliefs many Quakers in the area joined the Continental Army to defend their homes from British attack.

A large bronze plaque placed on a rock outcrop south of the Quaker Meetinghouse and north of their unmarked graves is contains the image of an eagle with spread wings perched on a flag shield superimposed over four flags and laurel leaves. The plaque is inscribed:

>
