This little peak lies beside the metal road that leads to the Mangatepopo Valley and the Tongariro Crossing. It looks like a nicely rounded hill just waiting to be climbed. We used to visit here and follow the overgrown track around the base and then up through the crater to reach the top where we would sit and enjoy the awesome views of the mountains. Down below, you will see the trampers setting off to do the Crossing Walk up the valley, passing the cone shaped Ngauruhoe and climbing the Staircase up onto Tongariro. In the other direction southwards, you can see Mt Ruapehu with the Chateau at its base.

Excerpt from The Crossing Backpackers website: At 1225 m, Pukeonake is the Plateau’s lowest crater. Overlooking the flat lands to the west, it’s a small scoria cone – just a baby at the edge of the Plateau. After less than an hour’s walk to the top, you will be overlooked by Ngauruhoe, Tongariro and Ruapehu. These giants are still active volcanoes; little Pukeonake is inactive but has its own magic.

Its broad shallow crater holds myriads of tiny plant life – native and exotic – and is a great place to linger and eat your lunch while you admire the three big volcanoes on one side and the flatter land forms on the other.

Parking Spot: S 39° 08.500 E 175° 33.540
Directions: To reach here, drive up Mangatepopo Road and look for the rough parking area just before the base of the hill on the right hand side of the road. Check Google map and you will see the vague track around the west-southwest side and follow the stream into the crater area and climb the track. Depending on the state of the track, it could be easy or it could be wet and slippery.
Wear suitable shoes and always carry warm clothing. This is a mountain area. There may be snow in winter.
