Located off of County Road 905 on upper Key Largo is the Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park.
"This park’s 2,500 acres encompass the largest remaining tracts of rockland hammock in the continental U.S. A short paved walking/biking trail takes you into the main public part of the habitat, where you can find breeding populations of Black-whiskered Vireos, Mangrove Cuckoos and White-crowned Pigeons; 20+ species of wood-warblers can be found during spring and fall migration. Butterfly viewing can be rewarding, look for Ruddy Daggerwings and Zebra Longwings gliding through the hammocks. An additional 4 miles of paved trails, as well as off-trail possibilities, are accessible after obtaining a free backcountry permit (at neighboring John D. Pennekamp State Park). Rarities such as Brown-crested Flycatcher, La Sagra’s Flycatcher, Thick-billed Vireo and Zenaida Dove have been found here." (Copied from the Great Florida Birding Trail website.) (
