Unitarianism is a theological movement whose fundamental tenet is the belief that God is a single person as opposed to the more prevalent Christian dogma that God is a Trinity composed of the God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Unitarians believe that the teachings of Jesus were inspired by this singular God and Jesus is not an incarnated deity. In the United States, the Unitarian theology began in Boston, MA in 1784 and spread from New England. Many prominent Americans were Unitarians, including Presidents John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Millard Fillmore, and William Howard Taft; also poet Ralph Waldo Emerson, architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and women's rights leader Susan B. Anthony.

Unitarian Universalism in Monson dates back to about 1800. It wasn't until 1876 that regular meetings were held. The present building was begun with a $26,000 matching gift donation from local mill owner Dwight K. Ellis. The building was constructed in 1889 in the Victorian Gothic style designed by architect Henry Martyn Francis.

The structure is built of locally quarried light and dark granite blocks. The entrance is located at the base of a front four-story high tower which is topped with an open belfry and a tapered hexagonal steeple topped with a finial. The portico entrance is reached by a set of stair and is covered by a small gabled roof. To the right of the tower is the main block of the church. It features a large multi-paned window with a rounded top made of alternating light and dark blocks of granite. Above is a gabled slate roof.

The south side of the building has a one-story high rounded tower with five tall rectangular windows and a conical slate roof. Next is a second portico entrance with The portico entrance a set of stair and covered by a small gabled roof. The back forms a T protruding out from the main building. It is one bay wide and has a three tall rectangular windows on the lower level, a course of decorative stonework and a large semicircular window at the upper level. Above is a cross-gabled slate roof.
