" Sa construction s'échelonna de 1440 à 1500 à l'initiative de l'archevêque du même nom. Couronnée d'un clocher, elle est toujours restée isolée du reste de la Cathédrale. Superbement sculptée, elle fut vendue comme bien national pendant la Révolution et transformée en fabrique de plombs de chasse et magasin à fourrage. La tour redevient édifice religieux par décret du 29 juin 1851.
La flèche, tronquée par une tempête ayant donné des vents de force d'ouragan au XVIIIe siècle, est aujourd'hui coiffée par la statue dorée d'une Vierge à l'enfant appelée Notre-Dame d'Aquitaine (réalisée par Jean-Alexandre Chertier et installée en 1863), et abrite un fameux bourdon de plus de 8 tonnes. La statue de la vierge au sommet est tournée vers le village de Saint Raphaël, situé dans le Médoc, d'où était originaire Pey Berland.
La situation isolée de cette « tour-clocher » n'a rien de bien étonnant en Gironde, où les exemples sont légion. En particulier du fait des vibrations des cloches et du sol marécageux, qui auraient pu fragiliser la cathédrale. Cependant, il faut rappeler que la tour était autrefois reliée à la cathédrale par les maisons des chanoines, selon une coutume en vigueur dans tout l'Ouest de la France.
Il faut escalader deux-cent trente trois marches dans un étroit escalier à vis pour atteindre la terrasse située au sommet de la tour et qui a la forme d'une galerie autour de la flèche. Elle se trouve à environ cinquante mètres du sol. La base de la statue se trouve à 60 mètres, et la hauteur de cette dernière est de 6 mètres. "

The spire, truncated by a storm that gave hurricane-force winds in the 18th century, is today capped by the golden statue of a Virgin and Child called Notre-Dame d'Aquitaine (made by Jean-Alexandre Chertier and installed in 1863), and houses a famous bumblebee weighing more than 8 tons. The statue of the virgin at the top is turned towards the village of Saint Raphaël, located in the Médoc, where Pey Berland was from.
The isolated location of this "bell tower" is hardly surprising in Gironde, where examples are legion. In particular because of the vibrations of the bells and the marshy ground, which could have weakened the cathedral. However, it should be remembered that the tower was once linked to the cathedral by the houses of the canons, according to a custom in force throughout the west of France.
You have to climb two hundred and thirty three steps in a narrow spiral staircase to reach the terrace located at the top of the tower and which has the shape of a gallery around the spire. It is about fifty meters from the ground. The base of the statue is 60 meters, and the height of the latter is 6 meters. "
