François-René, vicomte de Chateaubriand, né à Saint-Malo le 4 septembre 1768 et mort à Paris le 4 juillet 1848, est un écrivain, mémorialiste et homme politique français. Il est considéré comme l'un des précurseurs du romantisme français et l'un des plus grands noms de la littérature française.
Issu de la noblesse bretonne, membre le plus célèbre de sa famille originaire de Saint-Malo, Chateaubriand s'inscrit politiquement dans la mouvance royaliste. Plusieurs fois ambassadeur auprès de souverains divers, il est nommé ministre des Affaires étrangères de 1822 à 1824 sous la Restauration et compte, sous le règne de Charles X, parmi les ultraroyalistes. Les nombreuses responsabilités politiques et diplomatiques qui jalonnent sa carrière ainsi que son goût pour le voyage, en Amérique puis dans le bassin méditerranéen, structurent une vie marquée par l'exil et la nostalgie de la stabilité.
