The temple was built between 1825 and 1832 by David Willson, leader of the breakaway Children of Peace sect of the Society of Friends. They were also referred to as Davidites.
The design is Willson's vision of Solomon's Temple. Attributes of the 60 foot square structure include an equal number of windows on each side, and an equal number of doors, in line with the sect's belief in equality amongst all.
The sect flourished from 1812 until 1866 when Willson passed away. Membership slowly dwindled. The last service was conducted in 1886.
The building fell into disrepair and was in danger of demolition until the York Historical Society stepped in and saved it in 1918.
The buildings and grounds are once again open to the public. There is an admission fee except during special events.
