Soms vraag je je af wat zich daar boven je hoofd afspeelt in het heelal. Een tipje van de sluier wordt hierover opgelicht bij Volkssterrenwacht Orion. In het Westfriese Bovenkarspel staat een unieke sterrenwacht met een uitstekend geoutilleerd observatorium, een expositieruimte én een planetarium. In de prachtige expositieruimte staan diverse vitrinekasten waarvan het materiaal om de zes maanden vernieuwd wordt. In het planetarium worden verschillende films vertoond en kan men de sterrenhemel, ongeacht de weersgesteldheid, binnenshuis aanschouwen. Ook verzorgt Orion diverse lezingen en presentaties voor o.a. scholen, groepen, familie- uitjes en het bedrijfsleven.

Volkssterrenwacht Orion is gevestigd op de eerste verdieping in het Streekbos Paviljoenen behoort tot één van de sterrenwachten met de grootste spiegeltelescoop (40 cm in diameter) en is in het bezit van een montering, die uniek is in de wereld.

's Avonds kan er door telescopen naar het heelal worden “gegluurd”. In het observatorium staan prachtige grote telescopen, waardoor bij zonnig, helder weer naar de zonnevlammen en zonnevlekken gekeken worden en ‘s avonds naar de Maan en de planeten.

Voor het publiek is Volkssterrenwacht Orion geopend iedere zondagmiddag van 13 - 17 uur ; bezoekers kunnen zich hier laten informeren; niet alleen over weer- en sterrenkunde; ook over ruimtevaar en onderwerpen, die er zijdelings mee te maken hebben. Er is onder andere een mooie collectie fossielen ( ook van dino's), mineralen en voorwerpen, waarmee vroeger de positie werd bepaald door schepen. De toegang is gratis ( dit geldt ook voor de publiekskijkavonden).

Sometimes you wonder what is going on above your head in the universe. A tip of the veil is being lifted about this at Volkssterrenwacht Orion. In the West Frisian Bovenkarspel there is a unique observatory with an excellently equipped observatory, an exhibition space and a planetarium. The beautiful exhibition space contains various display cabinets, the material of which is renewed every six months. Various films are shown in the planetarium and the starry sky can be seen indoors, regardless of the weather. Orion also provides various lectures and presentations for schools, groups, family outings and the business community.

Volkssterrenwacht Orion is located on the first floor in the Streekbos Paviljoenen is one of the observatories with the largest mirror telescope (40 cm in diameter) and has a mount that is unique in the world.

In the evening telescopes can “peek at” the universe. The observatory has beautiful large telescopes, which look at the solar flares and sunspots in sunny, clear weather, and at night at the Moon and the planets.

Volkssterrenwacht Orion is open to the public every Sunday afternoon from 1 - 5 pm; visitors can obtain information here; not just about meteorology and astronomy; also about space travel and subjects that are indirectly related to it. There is, among other things, a nice collection of fossils (including dinosaurs), minerals and objects, with which the position was determined by ships in the past. Admission is free (this also applies to the public viewing evenings).
