University News Oct. 2018

"After being dark for nearly a decade, the Kaltwasser Flame at Wayland Baptist University came to life Monday amidst a hail fireworks lighting the night sky.

Still believed to be among the largest faceted, back-lit, stained glass sculptures in the world, the Kaltwasser Flame was originally lit in 1996. Time and the effects of West Texas wind and storms took its toll on the flame. As the outdated lighting system began to fail, the flame was extinguished.

Two years ago, the original artist, Chuck Berg out of Lubbock, began the process of rebuilding the flame. New LED technology gives off a more vibrant light and the systems controlling the flame are now much easier to maintain.

The sculpture is 3 ½ stories tall and has decorated the library since its opening."
