Stonefield is a very small, very new winery. The Stokesdale location has only been in place since March 2006. There is a vineyard out front and a beautiful tasting room. Though he does grow some of his own fruit, much of his wine is made from fruit purchased elsewhere. (Note: for 2007, he's looking for a good source of bulk blueberries!)
Robert Wurz has a Ph.D in Wine Chemistry, and his education as well as skill is evident in his product. Additionally, he often runs the tasting himself. He's a character, and is quite proud of his wine.
Stonefield charges $5 to taste 10 of his wines, and this includes a souvenir engraved Stonefield wine glass to take home.
Because of the small size, there's really not much to tour. But we did get to poke our heads into his production room. But the real treat is talking to the winemaker and enjoying his running commentary.
One wine we particularly enjoyed is a heavy and potent dessert wine he titles "Vin de Narle'". He was planning on blending this stuff with other wines, but his co-workers told him he needed to bottle and sell this "gnarly wine". So, they embellished the name and sell it by the truckload!
In addition to offering hand-crafted wines and gifts, they can also host vineyard weddings.
Also, they have even hosted a Geocaching event!

Overall Comments:: 7 of the wines he was offering this year have won awards. The 2006 Blueberry variety had sold out an hour before we arrived, which bummed us out.
Some of his grapes are grown in the Piedmont region in the shadow of Pilot Mountain. Be sure to see the picture of the vineyard on the counter.
Note: They do not ship outside of North Carolina.
