The origin of this church dates to 1897 with the founding of the Mount Carmel Society in Springfield whose mission was to preserve the celebration the feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and provide a church for the Italian community. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel church was founded and operated by the Sacred Stigmata of Our Lord Jesus Christ to serve the Italian community of the South End of Springfield, MA. The church was designed by John William Donohue in the Romanesque Revival style, begun in 1911 and completed in 1912.
The façade of the church is composed of a mixture of red and yellow bricks. A fan shaped stairway leads up to a set of double doors.A relief sculpture above the door depicts St. Simon Stock of the Carmelite Order receiving the Brown Scapular from the Blessed Virgin Mary. Below the relief dedication to the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel. The door is flanked by an identical double set of windows with a rounded lintel.
Above the door is a large rose window flanked by plaques depicting the Papal keys on the left and an open book on the right. Below the gable roof is the a medallion of St. Michael the Archangel, the patron saint of the Diocese of Springfield. On the east side of the church is a tall Italian style campanile. The sides of the church are four bays wide with two story high windows with rounded tops.
