Longfellow Junior High School at 320 W. Jefferson was constructed in 1936-1937 as an elementary school by the WPA. This is a one-story, 14-room building built of coursed and rusticated native sand stone. The roof is flat and the main entrance and entrances on the ends are recessed behind a stone archway. The sand stone has been painted beige.
The school is 72 ft. wide and 270 ft. long and was once the largest building in McIntosh County. The ribbon window units which have concrete sills have been altered. The top half consists of 48 glass blocks, with the lower half having small double hung windows. To the right of the main west-facing entrance the stone wall indicates that there once was a bronze WPA shield mounted there.
