Dit herenhuis aan het Grote Noord 20 werd in 1865-1866 gebouwd naar een ontwerp van de Hoornse architect A.C. Bleijs. Het is een vroeg ontwerp van deze bekende Hoornse architect. Zijn inspiratie putte hij uit de Franse bouwkunst van het tweede keizerrijk van Lodewijk Napoleon. In deze tijd werd Parijs ingrijpend herbouwd en de stijl die toen ontstond heeft grote navolging gehad in Europa en Amerika. We spreken dan ook wel van de Second Empire Style, een manier van bouwen die zelfs weleens met een bruidstaart wordt vergeleken. De kleuren van dit pand, die aan het einde van de 20e eeuw weer in hun oorspronkelijke staat teruggebracht zijn, en de decoratie van de gevel maken inderdaad een frivole en overdadige indruk.

This mansion at Grote Noord 20 was built in 1865-1866 to a design by the Hoorn architect A.C. Bleijs. It is an early design by this famous Hoorn architect. He drew his inspiration from the French architecture of Louis Napoleon's second empire. During this time Paris was radically rebuilt and the style that then emerged has been widely imitated in Europe and America. We therefore speak of the Second Empire Style, a way of building that is sometimes compared to a wedding cake. The colors of this building, which were restored to their original state at the end of the 20th century, and the decoration of the facade do indeed make a frivolous and lavish impression.
