Das Hubschraubergeschwader 64 (HSG 64) wurde am 1. Januar 2013 am Standort Laupheim neu aufgestellt. Das Geschwader ist das einzige Hubschraubergeschwader der Luftwaffe und mit dem mittleren Transporthubschraubern vom Typ Sirkorsky CH-53 ausgerüstet. Am bisherigen Luftwaffen Standort Schönewalde/Holzdorf verbleibt eine Lufttransportgruppe des HSG 64. Die CH-53 in Sonderlackierung symbolisiert den Übergang vom Heer zur Luftwaffe. Das HSG 64 ist mit seinem Stab und 2 Gruppen im baden-württembergischen Laupheim, sowie mit einer Gruppe im brandenburgischen Schönewalde/Holzdorf stationiert. Bis zum 01. Januar 2013 war die Einheit noch dem Heer unterstellt und als Mittleres Transporthubschrauberregiment 25 teil der Heeresflieger. Mit der Umstrukturierung der Bundeswehr wechselte die CH-53 Flotte zur Luftwaffe und die NH-90, die das HSG 64 am Standord Holzdorf flog, gingen ans Heer. Hauptaufgabe ist nun der teilstreitkraftübergreifende Lufttransport im nationalen und multinationalen Bereich mit dem Waffensystem Sikorsky CH-53. Das Hubschraubergeschwader 64 ist weiterhin für die Planung, Steuerung, Durchführung und Überwachung von Rettung von Personal/Personal Recovery (PR), Unterstützung von Spezialkräften/Special Operationforce Air (SOF-AIR), medizinischer Evakuierung/Medical Evacuation und militärischer Evakuierunsoperationen/Military Evacuation Operation (MilEvakOp) im taktischen, operativen und strategischen Einsatzspektrum zuständig. Das Herstellen und Erhalten der personellen und materiellen Einsatzbereitschaft des Geschwaders und der medizinischen Ausrüstung fällt ebenfalls in den Verantwortungsbereich des HSG 64. Auf Weisung der zuständigen Dienststelle werden Patiententransporte im Rahmen der Anschlussversorgung von strategischen durchgeführt. Die Neuaufstellung des Geschwaders und der Wechsel des CH-53 vom Heer zur Luftwaffe sind nun sogar ein doppelter Grund für die erste Sonderlackierung des HSG 64. In der Mitte des Rumpfes bis zum Heckausleger verläuft die Farbe Schwarz in ein helleres Heeresfliegergrau. Damit wird die Herkunft aus der Heeresfliegertruppe symbolisiert. Die Bugspitze zeigt ein dunkles Blau, dass im weiteren Farbverlauf nach hinten in ein helleres Blau übergeht und die Zukunft des Hubschraubers in der Luftwaffe darstellt. Die Leistungen der „alten Betreiber“ werden in besonderer Weise gewürdigt. Neben den Wappen der mittleren Transporthubschrauberregimenter sind am Heck die verschiedenen Einsätze festgehalten. Dazu zählen unter anderen die Brandbekämpfungen in Fahrenberg, Grafenwöhr, Thumsee, Larissa, Attika, in den Abruzzen und auf dem Peloponnes. Weitere Hilfsflüge wurden bei Erdbeben wie bei Udine und in Pakistan, dem Lawinenunglück bei Galtür sowie bei den Hochwassern an der Elbe, Oder und Donau geflogen. Nicht zu vergessen ist die humanitäre Hilfe in Pakistan, im Kurdengebiet und die Einsatze im Irak, auf dem Balkan, in Afghanistan, IFOR, KFOR, ISAF und im Kongo. An den Seiten galoppieren Vollblüter, sie künden vom guten Ruf der CH-53 als zuverlässiges Arbeitspferd. Die Unterseite ziert, gut sichtbar vom Boden aus, das Wappen des Hubschraubergeschwaders 64. Im Systemzentrum Luftfahrzeugtechnik der Luftwaffe in Erding wurde die Sonderlackierung aufgebracht. Die Bundeswehr reduziert derzeit die CH-53-Flotte auf noch 66 Maschinen, von denen 60 in den Versionen GA & GS dem Geschwader in Laupheim und Schönewalde zugeordnet sind. Die sonderlackierte CH-53G ist eine der ältesten der Flotte und hat schon über 6000 Flugstunden auf dem Buckel. Noch bis 2015 ist sie am Himmel über Laupheim zu sehen, bevor sie dann außer Dienst gestellt wird. „Für Sonderlackierungen nehmen wir immer Luftfahrzeuge, die bald ausgemustert werden“, erklärt Kommodore Stefan Demps. „Dann muss man sie nicht irgendwann erneut umlackieren. Diese CH-53 ist eine der ältesten und hat mit die meisten Flugstunden. Sie hat mit Sicherheit viele der Einsatzorte gesehen, die hinten auf dem Heck zu lesen sind.“ Nach ihrer Dienstzeit wurde sie in Laupheim am Eingang des Flugplatzes aufgestellt
