Nissen hut on the premises of the airlift museum in the Lower Saxon community of Faßberg.
The Nissen hut shows a part of the exhibition inside.
This part of the exhibition deals with the activities during the airlift from and in the Faßberg airbase. Faßberg was the coal base which was supplied from Berlin. 539113 tons of coal were flown to the blocked Berlin. Until September 1948, the Royal Air Force flew to Berlin. From this time on, the US Air Force was entrusted with the task (65 Skymasters) until 27.08.1949 (last flight to Berlin). It commemorates the Santa Claus action of the US pilots who, from Faßberg, gave presents to 10000 Berlin children for Christmas. Up to 5000 soldiers of the British Army as well as soldiers and pilots of the US Air Force and about 5000 German workers (GCLO) worked at the Faßberg airbase. The enormous importance of Faßberg airfield, from which the largest tonnage was flown to Berlin, was underlined by the farewell parade (Airlift Memorial Service) in Faßberg on 29 July 1949.
