"MAC" the Dragon was purchased by the Monson Arts Council in 2018. It has since become its mascot. It was created by local artist Peter G. Mayberry Sr. The sculpture is composed of about five hundred small stainless steel pieces cut to 1” x 6” x 12” and welded to ten ½” x 8’ re-bar rods cut and shaped to form of a dragon.
The winged dragon is depicted standing on its hind legs. Its forearms are hanging down and its head is held high. A pair of horns and a rise from its head and fins are located on its neck down to its back.
Dragons are common to many different cultures. Since this is a winged dragon it most closely resembles the typical Medieval western concept of a dragon which has wings, legs, and a tail. Dragons of all types date back to about 5000 BC as depicted in the art from east Asian countries.
