The small village of Liff is situated in the county of Angus on the border of the city of Dundee which it lies four miles west of the centre. Its parish church lies on the south-western edge of the village and has at the entrance, the First World War memorial commemorating the 35 men of the parish who lost their lives.
The memorial was unveiled in 1920, and takes the form of a Roman Doric fluted column in pink sandstone, surmounted by a ball finale block, and on top of an octagonal pedestal which contains the inscriptions on four faces. The main inscription reads as follows:
"GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS"
'IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THOSE FROM THIS PARISH WHO IN THE JOY OF YOUTH LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR, 1914-1918'
