Glas Maol (the grey/green mountain), is a 3504 feet, 1068 metres high mountain on the Mounth plateau in the Grampian Mountains between the Glenshee Ski Centre and Glen Isla. The summit area straddles the borders of three different counties, Angus, Aberdeenshire and Perthshire, now Perth & Kinross. The actual summit however, is a few yards inside Angus, making it the highest point in the county.
The mountain is typical of those in the area, a rounded dome, with steep lower slopes undercut with deep glens, rising to a fairly level summit. The actual summit is topped by a stone circular shelter and a trig pillar on the east side of the jumble of stones.
The pillar is built of local stones and has a large part missing on the top corner. The views are extensive to lowlands and mountains.
STEEPNESS: Very steep lower slopes lead to easier gradients higher up, with the summit area being level over an extensive area.
TERRAIN: Mainly grass, with some stony ground near the summit.
ACCESSIBILITY: The top can be reached from the Glenshee Ski Centre, two miles to the west, which has the advantage of beginning from a high starting point, the A93 road reaches its highest point from here. A longer route begins from the head of Glen Isla at the end of the public road five miles to the south. This follows the Monega Pass, an old route which headed over the hills to Braemar, and passes over Monega Hill, before skirting the eastern side of the mountain below the summit area.
NAVIGATION: Well worn paths lower down ease navigation, but the summit area is largely pathless, coupled with its levelness making the top difficult to locate in mist.
