Marker dedicated to Etienne Brule and his companion Grenolle, who were the first white men to see the St Mary Rapids and Lake Superior in 1622.
Brule emigrated to Canada in 1608. He was the first to explore what is now Ontario. Grenolle was an interpreter he joined with as they explored Ontario.
They reached what is now Salt Ste Marie in about 1622 - records of the time are very sketchy at best.
Etienne Brule was killed by an Ojibwe tribe in 1633.
