This sundial was an art project by a student and donated to the school. The art is based on being able to blend into the surrounding art/ landscape. It was originally placed in a garden but now stands on its own.

Campus newspaper article on the sundial.

By Robin Tuss Staff Writer:
"Passing by the Augustana Rose Garden this year, one notices that it has a new look — the addition of a combination sun-dial and sculpture done by Steve Thomas, a junior art major. Begun as a class project last winter, Thomas finished and in-stalled the sculpture this summer, donating it as his personal gift to the college. The idea for the sundial origi-nated in a conversation Thomas had with Ogden Dalrymple, pro-fessor emeritus and past art in-structor at Augustana. Thomas admired an idea that came down from the Aztec Indians who built monuments to time. These mon-uments came to be a part of the sculptural and artistic history of mankind, Thomas said. The Rose Garden, which was expanded in the spring of 1976 and renamed the Augustana Fel-lows Rose Garden, seemed the ideal location for such a monu-ment. Thus Thomas created his design specifically to fit the ap-propriate space in the garden. Augustana grounds director, John Hart, provided the 3/8 inch steel for the sculpture from mon-ey donated as part of the campus beautification grant from the Augustana Fellows. According to Thomas, the project took nine months from conception to finish and could conceivably last for three cen-turies. Thomas, whose major interest is in sculpture, said that this piece of art is more than just a sundial or a sculpture; -it- is a personal experience which is im-possible to put in to words. His clearest communication is in his art. "The only way to really ex-perience it is to sit down in the garden and spend some time. I would invite you to watch the shadow move and ponder a sun-dial with no numbers — what does that mean for you." Says Thomas, "These are my feelings, my words, shaped in steel."
