El Arish began as a soldier settlement sugar cane farming area in 1922, and was named after a Light Horse Supply depot in the Suez area in World War I. Many of the streets were named after high-ranking officers, including:- Chauvel Street after General Harry Chauvel, Glasgow Street after Major General Thomas William Glasgow, Monash Street after General John Monash, Royston Street after Brigadier General John Royston and Ryrie Street after Major General Granville Ryrie.
The post office opened in 1926, the present LPO opens at 0700 and closes at 1600 weekdays and has a small range of finance travel and identity services.
