With a 2010 population of 228, Quemado serves mainly as a rest stop for travelers along U.S. 60 and as a resupply point for local ranchers. The name is derived from the Spanish for burnt. When the first Europeans arrived there was evidence of a past fire which, in the dry high-desert air, had not dissipated.
