This plaque commemorates the deserters of the Second World War. The text on it is from the report "Kirschen der Freiheit" (engl.: "Cherries of Freedom") by the German writer Alfred Andersch, who describes his own desertion in 1944:

[DE] Nicht aus Furcht vor dem Tode sondern aus dem Willen zu leben.

[EN] Not out of fear of death but out of the will to live.

The panel was created by the sculptor Joachim Nitsch in 1990 and consists of a granite stone slab approx. 1.3 x 1 x 0.1 m. It is located at a height of approx. 3m on the outer wall of the restored Göttinger Amtshaus.
