The Holland Area Water Reclamation Facility treats water from the city and several surrounding townships. Water enters through two primary sanitary mains coming from the North and South. After treatment, the plant’s effluent is released into Lake Macatawa and is actually cleaner than the lake itself.

Biosolids: The headworks facility filters out inorganic solids larger than 1/4” by using mechanically cleaned bar screens. Ferric chloride is added prior to the four primary clarifier tanks to serve as a coagulant, sticking to the phosphorus in the flow stream and settling out with the solids. Microorganisms from the sludge begin to feed on any organic particles in an oxygen-rich environment.
Biosolid disposal: On average, the treatment process at the WRF generates a little more than 15 dry tons of residuals, commonly referred to as “sludge”, per day. Plant staff has two methods available to dispose of this large volume of residual material. One method is to dewater the sludge via mechanical equipment that presses water from the sludge to generate “cake,” which is then dry enough to be disposed of in a landfill. The second method is to stabilize the sludge with lime (increasing the pH to kill pathogens) and have it subsurface injected into farm fields where it is provided free to area farmers for beneficial reuse as a fertilizer and soil amendment.
