In 1986, a major international philatelic exhibition called Ameripex 86 was held in Chicago, IL. Many countries issued postage stamps in conjunction with this exhibition often with a theme alluding to that country’s ties to the United States. Israel issued a set of three stamps and a souvenir sheet featuring Jewish institutes of higher education located in the United States. Two of these institutes were also celebrating their centennial in 1986 (Yeshiva University and the Jewish Theological Seminary were both established in 1886).

Hebrew Union College was established in 1875 by Rabbi Isaac Mayer Wise, the founder of American Reform Judaism. It was the first permanent rabbinical seminary in North America. The school moved to its current site in 1912 when a core of new buildings, including the one featured on the stamp, were completed. These buildings were designed by Jewish-American (and deaf from birth) architect Abraham Lincoln Fechheimer. All these buildings reflect the Collegiate Gothic style that was popular for educational institutions at that time.

After substantial renovations, the building depicted on the stamp was rededicated as the Cecil W. Herrman Learning Center in 1996. Cecil Waterman Herrman of Lexington, MS bequeathed his sizable fortune to the school in the early 1990s.
