Captain John Viets was the son of Dr. John Viets and Catharine Meyers Viets, the owners of the popular colonial Viets Tavern. Captain John Viets worked there as a tavern keeper and then served the first warden of Old Newgate Prison. He died of smallpox in 1777 and was buried on the hill north of the Viets Tavern and overlooking Old Newgate Prison.
