The family of the famous writer of childrens' books, Dr. Suess, lived in Springfield, MA. Dr. Seuss' real name was Theodor Seuss Geisel. Theodor was the son of German immigrants and grew up on Franklin Street in Sprinfield. His maternal grandfather George Seuss owned and operated a German bakery in the 1920s in Springfield, MA.
This horse drawn, wooden, bakery wagon from the early 20th century is owned by the Springfield Museums. It has been repainted by local artist John Simpson as the George Seuss Bakery wagon to illustrate the type of wagon that was used to deliver goods before they was replaced by the automobile.
