Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Piedade also known as Mãe Soberana is a Marian sanctuary. It is a modern temple, with a futurist design, resembling a spacecraft.
It was build in the early 90's next to the old hermitage existent on the spot. The yearly pilgrimage became too popular - actually the most popular Catholic celebration south of Fatima - and the Church decided to built a larger temple. The design was created by the architect António Serrano Santos who changed the original blueprints, drew in the 70's by Nereus Fernandes which planned to destroy the old hermitage.
The pilgrimage takes place on the 5th of May and an immense crowd visits the sanctuary in that day.
