This project was proposed in the spring of 2018, with the support of both the College of Visual Arts and Design and the University's Mean Green Fund. A cube, the sculpture stands on a concrete base, measuring 8' x 8' x 8'. There are supposed to be nine benches, created to be smaller versions of the cube, but as of this posting, there were eight to be found stored inside. The sculptor's
website describes
gardenblock as having been "inspired by the UNT Community Garden space and references themes of sustainability, community, and interdisciplinary creativity." The benches and cube both have vegetal patterns and cut openings, inspired by the work of insects on squash leaves, and the while the benches can be removed for distancing, the sculptor's intention was for visitors to enjoy the interior as well. It is open to the sky and the elements, but is well shaded. Over time, Mother Nature will do her work on the steel as well, with natural oxidation providing natural reds, oranges, and yellows.
