Thomas Lincoln, father of the president, was born four miles west of here ca. 1778. His parents, Abraham and Bathsheba Herring Lincoln, moved their family to what is now Kentucky about 1782. There Thomas grew up and married Nancy Hanks, who gave birth to Abraham Lincoln on 12 Feb. 1809. Many Lincoln relatives remained in this community. Here, along the Valley Turnpike, stood the Lincoln Inn, a tavern operated by David Lincoln, a first cousin of Thomas. David and the future president exchanged letters about their family history in 1848.
