This cemetery is situated on the north-western edge of Dundee close to the border with the county of Angus. The land was originally in Angus, but was annexed bt Dundee City Council in 1989 for a new cemetery due to overcrowding in the city's other cemeteries.
The cemetery lies just off the A923 Coupar Angus road near the village of Birkhill and utilises a long strip of ground that runs south to north along the edge of the city's Templeton Woods. The main entrance is at the south-eastern corner on Templeton Road, although there is another access route to the north where the cemetery is expanding.
