In 1963 the Rochester Institute of Technology adopted a Bengal tiger cub at the Seneca Park Zoo. Thus, a Bengal tiger was the logical choice the University chose a mascot. In 1989, the Student Government commissioned the bronze statue of a Bengal tiger. The life size sculpture of the tiger is on a rectangular wooden base. The tiger is depicted in a low slung, stalking position while walking on an incline of rocks. The tiger's mouth is open to show its teeth and its tongue.
A plaque on the rocks on the left side of the tiger is inscribed:
THE RIT BENGAL TIGER
Sculpted by D.H.S. Wehle
The tiger statue concept was originated by
RIT student, Eric S. Senna,
with the support of
the RIT Student Directorate.
