The Vennbahnradweg (Venn-Railway-Bicycle-Track) is converted railway through three different countries. It starts in Troisvierges (Luxembourg) goes via St. Vith through Belgium and ends in Rothe Erde, a district of Aachen. The track is divided into two parts which are connected in St. Vith (Belgium). The leg from St. Vith to Aachen is 89km and the leg to Troisvierges is 32km which makes a total of 121 km.
The railway-track has changed its nationality after WW I. The track starts and ended on Belgium ground but crosses Germany on some areas. For that, the track became completly Belgium even, where is was on German ground.
Today in Europe having open borders, you are still cycling through different countries on and changing the countries can only be realized by the different signs used to mark the trail. The trail has, like most converted railways no serious grades and is family friendly. The touristic institute of the area recommends 6 legs for the complete track but riding the complete track in one ride is no problem. Public transport to the start and the end is available. Please check the web-page gives you more informations. You can also continue your ride to the Netherlands which are near to the endpoint in Aachen and make a four-countries-in-a-day-ride.
