The B978 road runs north-east from the city of Dundee into the rural countryside of the county of Angus. The C4 road takes a staggered route north and westwards via other roads from the town of Monifieth, eventually ending on the C6 at Duntrune not far from the city boundary. At the point where the two roads meet at a staggered junction on the B978 just south of the tiny village of Kellas, this milestone can be found.
The milestone stands on the west side of the B978 and is typical of others in the area, being of unpainted sandstone. The placenames are hard to decipher, but on one face the estate of Duntrune is stated westwards on the C4. The other face deals with the B978, with Dundee to the south, and the villages of Kellas and Wellbank to the north.
