From Find A Grave: Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. A graduate of West Point, he served as an officer in the 2nd Dragoons and was decorated for bravery in the Mexican War. At the start of the Civil War, he was a Major assigned to New Mexico to fight the Navajos when he resigned to join the Confederacy in 1861. Commissioned a Brigadier General, Sibley went to San Antonio, where he helped organize three regiments of Texans into a brigade. He then launched an invasion of New Mexico and defeated the Federals at the Battle of Valverde, February 21, 1862. In charge of the New Mexico expedition, he seized Albuquerque, Santa Fe and beat the Federal force of Colorado. Forced to evacuate the territory in 1863, he assumed command of a brigade in Louisiana for the remainder of the war. After the war Sibley went to New Orleans, Richmond and New York, where he was recruited into the Egyptian Army as a General in 1869.
