From Find A Grave: Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. Served in early part of the war a Captain in the 14th South Carolina Infantry, fighting with his unit in all the Battles from the Seven Days in June 1862 to Fredericksburg in December 1862. Promoted Colonel and commander of the 14th South Carolina on February 20, 1863, and led it in Stonewall Jackson's famous and successful flank march at the Battle of Chancellorsville. He assumed command of his brigade after its leader, Brigadier General Samuel McGowan was wounded in the battle. At the Battle of Gettysburg, he led the brigade in the assault of Pender's Division on the Union 1st Corps in McPherson's Woods on the first day of the engagement, and was held in reserve on the second and third days. Promoted Brigadier General, PACS on September 10, 1863 over the head of Col. D.H. Hamilton, who was senior to him (and who resigned due to the move). He was given command of Cadmus Willcox's brigade of Alamabans, whom he led at the Battles of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania.
