After the city of Göttingen decided in 1988 to forego tropical wood, in 1991 they also joined the “Climate Alliance for the Preservation of the Earth's Atmosphere”. In a competition in göttingen's schools for a "memorial tropical wood", the decision fell on the design of the students of the Hainberg high school. In 1992 the memorial, which consists of four wooden steles, was erected.
In 2012 and 2018, parts of the memorial had to be replaced because of decayed wood.
