Like his more famous brother, Oliver, James Loving also met with a violent end, but unfortunately, there are no account details to be found. The 1970 Texas Historical Marker here for him and his wife provides some background:

(1811 - 1869) (1820 - 1877)

The sixteenth family in Dallas County. Came by covered wagon and flatboat from Kentucky to Texas in 1843 as members of the Peters Colony. Arrived in Dallas County (then unorganized) in 1844.

On a 640-acre grant (2 mi. east) from Mercer's Colony, they built log cabin, raised corn, wove cloth, and boiled soil from salt lick to make own salt. Had 8 children.

Loving, a brother of pioneer trail driver Oliver Loving, was killed by a horse thief in 1869.

His Findagrave page notes that the couple were initially buried at the Housely Cemetery, but at some point they were brought here to Lyons Cemetery. This was probably for the best, as what remains of Housley is under a parking lot, with just a few headstones remaining. The historical marker stands behind their marble headstone, which is in very good shape. It has a rose for each of the couple over their informational medallions, which read:
