"The Sustaining Arch" stands on the edge of a small park at the south end of the Library Mall on the campus of the University of North Texas. A plaque dedicates it to university students who are no longer with us.

While the university football team is known as the "Mean Green" -- "Thanks, Mean Joe!" -- the school mascot is the eagle. Spend enough time here and you'll find that the personified version of the eagle is named "Scrappy."
This bronze arch is sculpted to resemble books stacked atop each other, and measures 10' by 7' by 18". The books were cast from molds of real books, and one can actually make out the pages and even a few titles. It was completed by Jonathan Snow in 2008 as he finished his M.F.A. in sculpture, and was placed up on the brick wall to keep it safe from pedestrian traffic. This had the coincidental result of making it a great place to get a framed photo of the mall fountains and the university's clock tower. A dedication plaque was placed here as a student memorial in 2019, and it reads:
