Het monument is onthuld in 1907 naar een ontwerp uit 1906 door H.J. Evers met Arend Odé, en werd bekostigd door de Rotterdamse burgerij.
Het gedenkteken bestaat uit een monumentale fontein waarin een vierkante hoge onderbouw een obelisk draagt die door een bolvormige motief wordt bekroond. Hierop staat als symbool voor Rotterdam een gevleugelde vrouwenfiguur, die de Mercuriusstaf hoog houdt. Hieronder staan de wapens van stad en provincie, die herinneren aan de loop van de Waterweg. Aan de voorzijde staat een gedenksteen met het bronzen profiel van Caland, door een lauwerkrans en toepasselijk opschrift omgeven. Toepasselijke opschriften bevinden zich ook op de gedenktafels die tegen de drie overige zijden zijn geplaatst. Twee bronzen kinderfiguren symboliseren de handel en nijverheid van Rotterdam als handelsplaats.
Het monument stond van 1907 tot 1939, dus net voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog, aan het Van Hogendorpplein, ongeveer waar nu het Churchillplein is.
In 1939 werd het monument om verkeerstechnische redenen verplaatst naar de Veerkade bij de Veerhaven, en heeft daarmee het bombardement van mei 1940 overleefd.

The monument was unveiled in 1907 after a design from 1906 by H.J. Evers with Arend Odé, and was funded by the Rotterdam bourgeoisie.
The memorial consists of a monumental fountain in which a square high substructure bears an obelisk crowned by a spherical motif. This symbolizes a winged female figure of Rotterdam, which keeps the staff of Mercury high. Below are the arms of the city and province, which recall the course of the Waterway. At the front is a memorial stone with the bronze profile of Caland, surrounded by a laurel wreath and appropriate inscription. Appropriate inscriptions are also located on the memorial tables placed on the other three sides. Two bronze children's figures symbolize the trade and industry of Rotterdam as a trading place.
The monument stood on Van Hogendorpplein from 1907 to 1939, just before the Second World War, approximately where Churchillplein is now.
In 1939 the monument was moved to the Veerkade near the Veerhaven for traffic reasons, and thus survived the bombing of May 1940.
